Calling All Scouts: Opportunities Await You

Scouts are invited to work toward their goals at three specialized Geauga Park District programs this winter.

Bear Cub Scouts: Sharing Your World with Wildlife on Saturday, January 31 – 9:30 to 11 a.m. at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87), Russell Twp.

Bears (grade 3) will work on requirements for the Sharing Your World with Wildlife Achievement: 1) visiting a nature center, where they can view the new Return to the Ice Age exhibit, 2) learning what a wildlife conservation officer does, as well as talking about an animal that has gone extinct and some animals on the endangered species list, and 3) making a recycled bird feeder. Bring a two-liter pop bottle or milk jug for the project. Fee: $2 for out-of-county scouts. Program is indoors and wheelchair accessible.

Girl Scout Cadettes: Trees Badge on Saturday, March 14 – 10 a.m. to noon at Swine Creek Reservation, Lodge, 16004 Hayes Road, Middlefield Twp.

Cadettes (grades 6-8) will work on requirements for the Trees Badge with maple sugaring, studying tree anatomy and learning the many uses of wood. Sap gathering and other hiking activities will not be wheelchair accessible.

Webelo Cub Scouts: Naturalist Achievement Badge on Saturday, March 28 – 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87), Russell Twp.

Webelos (grades 4-5) work on requirements for the Naturalist Achievement Badge: 1) visiting a nature center, 2) learning about bird flyaways, 3) identifying poisonous plants in our area, 4) watching six animals in the wild, 5) identifying an animal found only in your area of the country (for us, it’ll be the Snowshoe Hare), and 6) learning about area wetlands and their role in supporting wildlife and humans.
