A trio of 8th graders has made Cardinal Schools history! On January 12th, Audrey A., Ana F., and Ava G., represented Cardinal Middle School at the Future City Competition – Ohio Region and finished THIRD OVERALL! It’s the highest finish for a Cardinal team since we started participating in the event six years ago.
Future City itself is about making the world a better place. Students imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future that showcase their solution to a citywide sustainability issue. This year’s theme was Powering Our Future and teams had to design a resilient power grid that could withstand and quickly recover from a natural disaster. Our team has been working on their model since October. At the competition the group gave a seven minute presentation to panels of judges and after finishing in the top five, presented again in a ballroom filled with hundreds of teachers, students, volunteers and judges.
In addition to their third place overall finish, the CMS team also received the “Best Moving Part” award for their earthquake simulator! Special thanks to teacher advisors Mr. Shaun Spence, Ms. Sharon Stotts, and Mrs. Mandi Matchinga, and to volunteers Mr. Vince Puruczky and Claire Zurbuch. Congratulations to everyone!
Eighth Grader Crowned Spelling Bee Champion
Congratulations to 8th grader Riley M. on winning this year’s district spelling bee! Students in grades three through eight participated in the event. Fellow 8th grader Slater C. finished as the first runner up and 6th grader Carter S. was the second runner up. Riley won in the sixth round of the competition by correctly spelling the word “buzzard.” She will now go on to represent Cardinal in the Geauga County Spelling Bee in February. Congratulations Riley and good luck!
