“I was told I was too small to play volleyball at the collegiate level,” Cardinal High School senior Taylor Soltis said. But with one swoop of the pen on Thursday, November 21, 2019, she proved them all wrong by signing her National Letter of Intent to play volleyball for Division III Marietta College. Alongside her parents Adam and Stephanie, and in front of her teammates and school administrators, Soltis put the pen to the paper around 10:25 a.m. and received a rousing round of applause. “I’m ready,” she said confidently.

Soltis first came to Cardinal in 2018 at the start of her junior year. She immediately joined the volleyball team playing at the libero position. In the 2019 season, Soltis recorded 439 digs and 36 ace serves. She served as captain and received 1st Team CVC and 2nd Team All-District honors. She finished her Cardinal volleyball career as a two-year letter-winner. She says one of her best memories from the 2019 season was beating Grand Valley – not only because Cardinal got the victory, but also because Marietta coaches were in the crowd that night. “The coach contacted me after the game and told me, ‘We have a spot for you’ and I was just so excited and relieved, and then I cried,” Soltis recalled.

She says she’s excited to play in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) because so many teams the Pioneers play are close to her home here. “Taylor worked hard to get to this point and we are so proud of her,” says Soltis’s mom Stephanie. “We are so grateful to Coach [Karisca] Chambers and to the Cardinal school district for believing in her and giving her the opportunity to play and grow – she wouldn’t be here, in this moment, without either one.”

Soltis plans to keep busy for what’s left of her senior year of high school playing for the basketball and softball teams, and running for the track team. Once she gets to Marietta, she plans to major in Neuroscience with the goal of one day enrolling in their Physician Assistant program.
