Jeremy’s Kids Christmas Fundraiser is an annual community service initiative that began in 2000 in memory of Jeremy Mizen, the son of Chardon High School Biology teacher Rob Mizen and his wife Dee. Jeremy died in a car crash on Christmas Eve in 1999 at the age of six years old. Instead of dwelling on their horrible loss and having this tragic event destroy their lives, Rob and Dee decided they would instead celebrate Jeremy’s life, focusing on the positive aspects of their son’s life and helping area families in need. The Jeremy’s Kids Christmas Fundraiser was born from that intention.

Since 2000, Jeremy’s Kids has grown into a major fundraiser generating between $6,000 and $10,000 each year for Geauga County families who are struggling financially with giving their children gifts on Christmas. Each year, CHS students join together with the community to ensure this relief is available via Jeremy’s Kids.

This year, CHS students in Actively Caring for People Club, Interact Club, and the Actively Caring Leadership class are working together to raise the funds. In addition, CHS is adding something new to the Jeremy’s Kids initiative, an event the school hopes will become an annual tradition:  Battle in the Barn.

Battle in the Barn will consist of a wrestling match between the Chardon Hilltoppers and Riverside Beavers wrestling teams. The purpose of Battle in the Barn is to help bring awareness to the Jeremy’s Kids fundraiser.  All proceeds from the match will be going directly to the charity started by Rob and Dee Mizen.

The wrestling match will be held during the school day as an assembly match on Thursday December 5th in front of the supporting CHS student body and teaching staff.

Wrestling was chosen since it’s a sport that fewer are familiar with – one of the most competitive, character-building interscholastic sports offered at CHS. The wrestlers from both teams are honored to help be part of the larger event of raising funds for Jeremy’s Kids.

Monetary donations for Jeremy’s Kids are being collected between now and December 13th. In mid December, presents will be purchased and distributed to area parents.

If you would like to make a monetary donation to Jeremy’s Kids, please make your check payable to Chardon Local Schools with “Jeremy’s Kids” written in the memo field and mail the check to: Rob Mizen c/o Chardon High School 151 Chardon Avenue Chardon, Ohio 44024.
