Taking advantage of the mountains of snow outside, Mrs. Santoro’s Kindergarten class decided to enlist the help of a snowman to assist in a recent classroom lesson. Students built a snowman one day, let it sit outside to solidify overnight, and then brought it inside on a sled the next day to spend the day inside the classroom. The special guest gave students a live science lesson in states of matter as the snowman transitioned from a solid to a liquid.

Throughout the day, students utilized their math skills to measure the snowman and document the results of its transition. “It was a really easy, and fun way to demonstrate and use these math and science components,” says teacher Gwen Santoro, “the students loved doing something different and hands-on; hopefully it’s a lesson they’ll remember and carry with them into the future.”
