Last chance to submit to Gordon Square Review’s literary contest and first issue!

Gordon Square Review’s literary contest deadline for prose and poetry is October 15th! Submissions cost $6.00, and winners will receive $250.00, publication in GSR’s debut issue, and a voucher for one free Lit Cleveland single-session class. GSR is also accepting prose and poetry submissions through October 15th! Submissions are free, and accepted contributors will be paid a modest honorarium.

October Workshops and Events

  • Beginning Memoir Writing w/Lee Chilcote (Free!)
    Wednesday, October 18th 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Rocky River Public Library, 1600 Hampton Rd, Rocky River

In this two-hour workshop, we’ll discuss the basic elements of writing your personal story. First, we’ll look at successful memoir pieces that tell true stories using the techniques of literary writing. Then we’ll complete a writing exercise aimed at getting you started on your own story. At the end, we’ll have time to share.

  • Between the Lines w/Tyler Davidson, producer of Take Shelter (Free!)
    Wednesday, October 18th 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., Happy Dog at the Euclid Tavern, 11625 Euclid Ave, Cleve.

October’s Between the Lines features Tyler Davidson, producer of Take Shelter, The Signal, Lost and Found in Cleveland, and other films, many of which are filmed or set in Northeast Ohio. Join us at Happy Dog East to see Tyler discuss film-making, chat with author James Renner about shooting films in Northeast Ohio, and take questions from the audience.

  • Writing Fears: Panel Discussion and Prep Zone w/Susan & Mary Grimm, Laura Walter, & Charles Oberndorf ($18/$12 for members)
    Saturday, October 21st 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Loganberry Books, 13015 Larchmere Blvd, Cleveland

The writers on our panel will share the fears that threaten their writing and what they do to overcome them. We’ll bring index cards, prompts, and treats. You bring your willingness to step over the line. Participants will leave with ideas and strategies for overcoming writing fears and becoming more productive.

  • Station Eleven Book Discussion and Creative Writing Workshop (Free!)
    Tuesday, October 24th, 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Cleveland Public Library Jefferson Branch, 850 Jefferson Ave, Cleveland

Join Lit Cleveland to discuss Emily Mandel’s Station Eleven, then explore how to channel your own ideas and let your creativity flow. All are welcome. Reading of Station Eleven is not required.

  • Writing Dialogue for Fiction, Plays, and Memoir w/Les Hunter ($45.00/$40.00 for members)
    Wednesday, October 25th, November 1st and November 8th, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., Gordon Square Arcade, 6516 Detroit Ave. Cleveland

This workshop will help writers develop and extend skills in creating dialogue for a variety of genres including fiction, drama, and memoir. The course will offer participants an opportunity to workshop a selection from a work in process, or create something new.

Join us for a reading, author talk and book discussion with award-winning authors Robin Yocum, Shelley Costa and Casey Daniels! The theme for the evening is “Fictionalizing Truth.” This event is part of Lit Cleveland’s Read Ohio series in partnership with Ohio Center for the Book at Cleveland Public Library.

  • Resistance Writing w/ Laura Grace Weldon ($20/$15 for members)

We live in challenging times and many of us feel called to express our despair, grief, fury, and confusion. We’ll briefly explore how writers respond to and provoke social change, then compose our own pieces. Participants will come away with a draft or two in the style they prefer —- poetry, short fiction, essay, whatever. Writers of all backgrounds / experience levels welcome.
