Chardon Library Book Buddies
Reading skills are important and your help is needed to encourage Chardon’s youngest students to keep reading over the summer. The Chardon Library Book Buddies Program is funded by the Chardon Rotary and continues to be a success with the help of Chardon Middle & High School students. Volunteers are needed to read with students who have just completed 1st or 2nd grade for six 1-hour sessions at the library. The program dates are June 9 through August 12. If you would like to be involved with this community program (and earn Community Service hours!), please call the Chardon Library @ 285-7601. Please plan to attend one mandatory informational meeting at the Chardon Library on Monday, May 12, at 7:00 or Wednesday, May 14 at 3:30. Student and adult volunteers are welcome!
CHS Book Club Café
Each spring, Chardon High School English teachers Dawn Weaver and Lynn Monaco, along with CHS Library Media Specialist Linda Ross, collaborate to develop a Book Club Café Project for the senior English students. On four consecutive Fridays seniors meet for student-led small group book discussions in the CHS Library Media Center “coffee house.” Students utilize the literary analysis skills they have learned in class to discuss a book that they have selected as a group.
For the first three weeks, the students read independently and meet over tea, cocoa, coffee and light refreshments, during class on Fridays in the Library “Cafe.” They analyze their group’s book in a casual, inviting, café atmosphere – aligned with student-designed discussion guides. The final week results in a culmination of the project that involves the student group multimedia presentations of their books. These final presentations may include creative dramatizations, musical interpretations, or video presentations to share their analyses and impressions of their books. Independent reading and public speaking are vital parts of the English learning standards at all grade levels. Over the years the Senior Book Club Café has become so popular it has spread to sophomore, junior and AP English classes as well. It is an exciting, effective way to assess learning and to promote life-long learning and enjoyment of good literature.
