by guest writer Pamela West who has left no mouse hole unexplored! Uh – that would be Mickey, of course.
The first time I visited Walt Disney World was in spring of 1972. I was a senior in high school and way too cool to be impressed with all the ‘magic.’ Mostly I just wanted to get a tan. My life went on as planned and I never gave Mickey another thought. Well, not until my son reached his 6th birthday in 1994.
I called Disney Reservations and my family was booked at Port Orleans. I had no idea what to expect. How do I get to the resort? What about tickets? And food? Will Matthew be able to ride everything? And there are HOW many theme parks now? I tried to talk to people who had been there and spent time in the library reading whatever I could find on the subject. If I had only called a travel agency! But it never occurred to me. Why should I pay someone to call Disney? I know how to dial a phone. Boy, you don’t know what you don’t know.
The details of that trip are vague now. But I can remember how I felt. So happy to see the huge smile on my son’s face. Crying as he hugged Mickey. Proud of how eager he was to experience every attraction. I was hooked. I wanted that feeling on every vacation.
The West Family Annual Disney Vacation was born! I planned a few more trips on my own….a kind of ‘hit and miss’ with resorts. Some off site, some on site, but learning more about Orlando each year.
Then, I met Marie Lovas, owner of Beaches & Dreams Travel Company. What a wealth of knowledge she had about my favorite place on earth! She offered to book my next trip, a combination of Walt Disney World and a Disney Cruise. She explained what a travel agent could do for me. And wait a minute……it doesn’t cost ME anything?! She knew the advantages of staying at each resort, (even applying new promotions to existing reservations), could make dining reservations, advise on theme park attractions and coordinate everything between the resort and the cruise. Wow. Again, you don’t know what you don’t know.
Matthew and I would go every year, and sometimes twice a year until he left for college. Hubby went a couple times, but those who know Eric, know his happy place in sitting in a tent in Colorado. (I think an “Adventures by Disney – Quest for the West” journey to Wyoming is in his future!) My son and I will always share a special bond of our love of all things Disney. One that will take on a whole new dimension once he starts his own family and we visit multi-generationally!
After my son left home, I still craved my annual trips to the land of the Mouse. But no one was as excited to travel with me as I anticipated. Perhaps I could develop a new relationship with Beaches & Dreams Travel. So in 2009, I joined the agency, working from my Chardon home, and specializing in helping other families to create their own wonderful memories at Walt Disney World.
What a perfect job for me!
Now my trips are more seasonal. I can usually be found wandering the parks every February, May, September, and December. Most are on my own (research you know!) but family members do tag along from time to time. When they do, it’s as the guest of an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner. Every detail has been taken care of. I have every resort, theme park, restaurant, and attraction imbedded in my memory banks.
I guess I am what you would call a mouse junkie. I need my fix and get such satisfaction helping others with their Disney vacations. If you would like to create your own family tradition, I would love to lead you to the magical world Walt Disney envisioned.

“I am so proud of my agents and their Disney knowledge,” says Marie Lovas, owner. “Each part of my team is an expert, and I know that no one can do a better Disney vacation for anyone than Beaches & Dreams Travel Company and any member of my team. Between all of us, we have been to Disney World, Disneyland, and on Disney cruises 100’s of times.”
Why not test that statement out for yourself and book your cruise today! No doubt you too will become a fan!
Doesn’t Pam sound like fun! If you agree and would like to meet her, she will be at the Red Maple Inn Holiday Country Fair talking Disney with fair goers and distributing all the latest brochures for DisneyWorld, Disneyland, Disney Cruise, and Adventures by Disney. Set aside Saturday and Sunday, November 30 and December 1 and visit Pam from 11a.m. – 6 p.m at 14707 S. Cheshire St. in Burton.
