Families Dig Reunions at Ohio State Park Lodges. Literally.

“Remember when.” These two little words are at the heart of many a discussion at multi-generational family gatherings. And Ohio State Park Lodges encourage the conversation – and add a fun touch of symbolism as well – with the Family Tree reunion program.

Through this popular program, families gathering at any of five Ohio State Park Lodges operated by Xanterra Parks & Resorts qualify to receive a free tree to plant in the state park during their stay.

They can then chart the tree’s growth over the coming years just as they chart the growth of the youngest child in the family. “Strengthening bonds and understanding family roots is a priority for family reunion participants, and when we see families gather to plant a tree’s roots in the ground, we can tell from their faces that the symbolism of the process is not lost on them,” said Hinch Knece, marketing manager for Ohio State Park Lodges. “Even the littlest family members understand that a tree will grow just like they will. And for families who return year after year – and we have many such groups – watching the tree grow taller and stronger along with their youngest members is a powerful reminder of the importance of family connections.”

The five Ohio State Park Lodges operated by Xanterra are located close to major Ohio cities and surrounding states, making it easy for families to gather from a variety of locations.

Knece recommends that families plan their reunions for this year soon to secure accommodations that are perfectly suited for families of all sizes. Accommodations include lodge rooms with kid friendly bunk beds as well as cabins with full kitchens and living rooms, a perfect gathering space for intimate family cookouts and late-night card games. All lodges also have a variety of pet-friendly accommodations.

Each of the five state park lodges also offer a wide range of activities suitable for every member of the family. During the summer, lodges offer supervised children’s activities including crafts and water games. Families can also try geocaching, which is like a high-tech treasure hunt using hand-held GPS units to search for treasures hidden in the parks. There are also games like basketball, volleyball, archery, disc golf, shuffleboard and horseshoes, indoor and outdoor pools, beaches and other adventures like fishing and boating and naturalist programs.
