Fascinating Caterpillars, Butterflies and Meadow Insects will Wow you at the Caterpillar Extravaganza on August 18 at The West Woods Nature Center

August is packing Geauga Park District with up-close-and-personal caterpillar, butterfly and meadow insect experiences!

For tons of all-ages fun, hit the Caterpillar Extravaganza on Sunday, August 18th from noon to 4:00 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center. Bigger and better than ever, this annual event features live, native caterpillars on their host plants in open air displays. Many of these stunning giants, representing the giant silk moth species, will be available to touch, hold and photograph. Be sure to bring your camera for various photo stations. You may also bring a caterpillar to the program to have it identified, or to add to our display and get a prize!

Additionally, a professional face painter will be creating designs of native caterpillars, butterflies and moths; enjoy a craft; play a game; look through microscopes; and more!

Also back this year, Monarchs and Meadow Insects will be at Frohring Meadows on Sunday, September 15th, and at Orchard Hills Park on Sunday, September 22nd, both 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Net and tag Monarch Butterflies, play an exciting “life-sized board game” dramatizing the hazards of Monarch migration, and catch a variety of butterflies, grasshoppers, Praying Mantids, katydids, beetles and other insects calling the meadow home.

Nets will be provided or bring your own. Participants may join in at any time. An overview at 12:30 p.m. will be followed by netting in the field; sun protection, socks, hats and long pants are recommended for moving through the meadow.

Registration is not required for either of these programs. Please call 440-286-9516 with questions.
