“I like to go to Coffee Corners to connect with family and friends. It has a great friendly, welcoming, and yet semi private atmosphere. It’s comfortable for meetings, reading, catching up or deep conversations.” ~ Amos Arnold

Coffee Corners Antiques and Coffee House in Burton is far more than just a coffee house. It is more than just an antique shop. There is something almost magical about the atmosphere that lifts you out of the harried busyness of the day and brings you into a place of calm and clarity, even if just for a few minutes. You’ve entered a world which appreciates all things wonderful and touches the realm of warmth between friends. We can suddenly see beyond the immediate into the important. The outer shell of mere existence is left outside and the essence of life emerges as all our senses are engaged. The aromas, the friendly chatter among best friends, the satisfaction of rich mochas and buttery homemade bakery, the strategically placed furniture, art, and handmade merchandise within an ages-old structure that exudes its own warmth, all invite us to remember how good life is.

“My favorite drink is a medium Coffee Corners Mocha. I get it with a single shot, and always decaf. This is what I get every time I come in and Sue knows exactly how to make it for me. Sometimes she sees me and just asks, “The normal?” Other times she just notices I am in line and makes it without asking and hands it to me. The atmosphere is warm, cozy, and relaxing. I most often go when I am doing a business meeting with another director from our program and we just need a relaxed place to sit, talk, and plan without the distractions of being at work or home.

“Coffee Corners is my choice over other coffee houses because the mocha I get tastes better than any other coffee drink I have ever had and because it is more inviting than any other place. There is a corner, a couch, a table, or a room for everyone. No matter where you are, you feel like you are in a private area and that you have escaped the rush and stress of real life for a few moments. Besides the food and drinks, I go when I just want to sit and visit with Jim. We can always enjoy a good conversation together there. My favorite place is the table tucked into a corner where we were sitting when we were on a date before we got married. As I looked across the table at him, it was the first time I realized this was the person that I wanted to marry.”~ Heather Leshovsky

The Beginnings

Sue and Jerry Wayman owned an antique shop in both Mesopotamia and Burton since 1985. They moved the Burton shop to its present location on the square in 1997. “We opened as an antique shop in Burton, and the side the coffee is on now was a tea room the previous owners left. We didn’t know what would go in its place. In Mesopotamia, we sold packets of coffee so my husband Jerry said, ‘Let’s open a coffee shop.’ We decided to add the coffee side a year later,” says Sue.

This was in addition to the full time jobs they both had elsewhere. After three years of doing both, Sue came to work full time in her own business. They ended up selling Coffee Corners about ten years later and moved to the Hocking Hills area to start another coffee house.

“We were there two years, “ says Sue, “and I missed my family here and of course all the people in Burton. So the people we sold to, sold back to us. Not too many people could get back a business that they sold! We were very blessed in being able to do so.”

…and Now

For Sue, the best part about owning Coffee Corners,”…is the love of Burton and the people here. We are like a big family here.”

Maintaining this local hot spot has kept the couple very busy. “Keeping up with all the new media that is out there is very challenging. I am very old school and I am learning about Facebook and other media to keep up with the times thanks to Gabe Arnold and tEkk3.”

Their menu continues to expand and now includes not only coffee, drinks, and bakery, but you can also order breakfast, appetizers, sandwiches, and even beer and wine.

Find fresh roasted specialty coffees, fair trade organic coffee, espresso, lattes, mochas, cappuccino, jet tea smoothies, chai, and a variety of fresh teas from Tame Your Tiger Tea. Cookies, muffins, breads and scones are baked fresh daily. Check the menu on the website for a fuller listing, though they may have added more items as well.

“We have started a crepe on Saturday nights along with the entertainment as an option of food,” says Sue. “We now have a full liquor license, but we just do Irish coffee and wine and micro brews. We have soup, Panini sandwiches, and specials every day.”

They hope to add a fence out front at some point to be able to have wine outside, but for now there is summer seating in the alley room out back.

You can enjoy music every Saturday night from 7-9 p.m. and from May through September you’ll find all those cool classic cars parked out front on Main Street on Wednesdays! “We started this years ago when we owned Tom and Jerry’s,” says Sue.
