GCPL is implementing a change for using computers and WiFi. Users are now required to use their library numbers and PINs (personal identification numbers) to begin a computer or WiFi session. As always, there will be no charge for this service. Anyone who needs a new library card may easily get one for free from any GCPL location.
This change helps improve customer service by allowing the library to accurately count how many computer and WiFi sessions occur during a given time period. This information helps libraries inform the state of Ohio of the demand for library use, which, in turn, affects funding. Additionally, this system will eventually allow patrons to wirelessly print directly from their devices. The library is not recording the sites or materials patrons visit or view. Patrons should close out their sessions when they are finished using a computer station or the WiFi.
“Libraries strive to continually improve and add functionality to existing services,” says GCPL Director Ed Worso. “Accurate reporting of increased usage reflects the benefit to the community and shows that our services are valued. This will help us build a case to the state about the validity of libraries. It’s proof that libraries work.”
The practice of requiring library card numbers and PINs to access computers and WiFi is not unique to GCPL. Most other library systems in Ohio have had this stipulation for years. Geauga County Public Library is committed to professionally serving its patrons and using the best methods and technology to provide materials and services.
