GGP Partners with Berkshire Schools to Pilot 8th Grade Career Awareness Day

In fulfillment of its objective to strengthen tomorrow’s workforce today, on Wednesday May 20, Geauga Growth Partnership hosted the 8th grade class from Berkshire Jr/Sr High School for tours with area businesses to learn about careers. The trip included visits to Troy Innovative Instruments, Great Lakes Cheese and University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center for a close look at the many career options to explore right in Geauga County.

The students were taken on a tour of Troy Innovative Instruments, where machine operators and engineers explained the many steps in the process of manufacturing and supplying high tech medical implants and other precision instruments. Students observed how a product was conceived and fine-tuned by the engineering team then produced in CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) machines. They were then surprised with a finished product to take home with them in the form of a key chain.

Great Lakes Cheese presented a four-stage presentation to illustrate the multi-faceted links in a supply chain. Students learned about the cheese production, including testing to packaging to marketing, branding for specific clients, and distribution.

Executive Vice President of Great Lakes Cheese John Epprecht addressed the students and told them he grew up in the area, attended Berkshire High School, and was happy to continue to work in the family business, which was founded by his father in 1958 and has grown to be the largest cheese packager in the country.

University Hospital doctors, nurses, radiology staff, EMT’s, along with Geauga County Sheriff Dan McClelland conducted a mock emergency drill, which illustrated how all the many members of a team must work together.  After the drill the staff explained their roles and highlighted the different jobs they perform in the hospital.

Geauga Growth Partnership, as part of its mission, is dedicated to helping “Build Tomorrow’s Workforce Today” through trainings like the high school Career Readiness Days, Internship Program, and now by introducing a Career Awareness Day for 8th grade. Students at this level, as part of their curriculum, are expected to make determinations about their general careerpath and course of study in high school. The goal of this program is to help aid students in that process.  Additional Career Awareness classes will be explored for the 2015/16 school year.

Geauga Growth Partnership is a 501 (C) 3 non-profit organization created in 2010, which works to retain and grow jobs, contribute to business growth and strengthen the local economy. Geauga Growth Partnership’s mission is to enhance the business climate, encourage job creation, to strengthen economic prosperity and to improve the quality of life for all Geauga County residents.
