Out there somewhere is a cobble full of colorful minerals, laying in a farm field or stream bed, covered in soil or sand, just waiting.
Don’t let its beauty go undiscovered for another thousand years! Enter it into the upcoming Boulder Beauty Contest, taking place during the family-oriented Glacial Glee with Ice Age Geology program held Sunday, June 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87), Russell Township.
Boulder Beauty Contest ribbons and certificates will be awarded in various categories – such as most colorful, oddest shape and mineral content – with complete contest rules posted at . Good Luck!
In addition to the contest, hands-on activities at the program will include panning for real gold in a baby pool; making your own “ice kame sundae,” with tasty toppings representing rock and sediment embedded in a vanilla “glacier;” and thanks to the donation of small boxes from Flambeau Plastics in Middlefield, a free glacial peddle rock collection that you can take home and expand on.
And while you’re at The West Woods, check out the inspiration for all this fun: Return to the Ice Age, a special exhibit featuring real Ice Age-era bones unearthed in Geauga County!
