Gurney Elementary First Grade Students Get Creative with Science

Patrick-2 in postThroughout the school year, each first grader at Gurney Elementary gets to be “Scientist of the Day.” The student gets to select a “first grade friendly” experiment to demonstrate to the class and the other students make predictions prior to the experiment based on the title.

The “Scientist of the Day” completes a form with instructions, predictions and the outcome of the experiment. Finally, the experiment is shown to the class which then leads to lots of scientific discussions. The scientist’s classmates are then given a copy of the instructions for the experiment so they can do it at home.

On Monday, Nov. 20, first grader Patrick Gibney was the lucky “Scientist of the Day.” His experiment was called “Magic Milk.” He added drops of food coloring to the milk and then dipped a Q-tip that had been soaked in dishwashing soap, into the milk. The colors repelled the Q-tip and scattered like magic.

“This activity is a great way to get the students creatively thinking about science while having fun!” said first grade teacher Julie Albrecht.
