Use black light to observe creepy-crawlies in the woods
What glows under a black light is called a phosophor – any substance that emits visible light in response to some sort of radiation, in this case the black light’s UV radiation. (Don’t worry, it’s not enough to hurt you.)
Of course what glows under a black light is also really eerie and cool, making it the perfect subject matter to explore around Halloween time.
Linking the coolness of nature with the coolness of black lights, all are invited to join Geauga Park District for this fun, purplish program in the park (and dress in costume to really soak in the spirit):
What: Halloween Blacklight Hike and Campfire
When: Saturday, October 18 – 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Where: Sunnybrook Preserve, 12474 Heath Road, Chester Township
First, a spooky-but-not-too-scary hike, led by Naturalist Linda Gilbert, will uncover awesome plants and other creepy-crawlies as they look under the black light beam. Then the group will gather around the campfire for stories and general seasonal socializing in the comfort of your great outdoors.
