History Comes Alive in The Diary of Anne Frank

Anne Frank Set
The setting of The Diary of Anne Frank at Geauga Lyric Theater.

From March 6 – 22, Anne Frank’s attic has been reproduced on the Geauga Lyric Theater’s stage. In this production of The Diary of Anne Frank, director Angela Miloro-Hansen and her scenic designer husband Randy Hansen have been hard at work replicating as many aspects of the attic apartment as they were able.

Director Hansen has been using a large documentary book received in her teens as reference to check on wallpaper, book titles and color palettes to make you feel as if you are in the actual space with Anne and her family. Armed with photos on her phone on a recent shopping expedition, she even managed to find the exact plaid fabric that covered the original diary. This play is a story that is dear to her heart. “It is a beautiful show that is not just about the ultimate fate of Anne Frank that we all know…but also about family life, struggles, humor, and day-to-day happenings of the two and a half years eight people lived together in hiding.”

Lack of privacy, conflicting personalities and emotional stress had to be dealt with as life continued on. Children grew, were schooled, and parents had to parent. Hansen keeps all the actors on stage at all times to reinforce the reality of the living situation and immerse the audience in the tension.
