Kindergarten and First Grade Students Harness the Wind

NDES’ Kindergarten and first-grade students are not only learning basic reading, writing and arithmetic, but harnessing electric currents and wind power in Mrs. Halle Davis’ STEM Class.

Kindergarten students are taking ABC’s one step further by engineering 3D Letters into keys on a keyboard. With Makey Makey, everyday objects become tools of inspiration as students learn and apply the basic fundamentals of electricity.

In first grade, students are exploring the simplest and least expensive sources of renewable energy by using wind power to test the design and construction of “sail cars.” Armed with drills and hammers, students applied engineering design process and reinforced the scientific method by building little-wheeled carts equipped with masts and sails that are powered by moving air generated from a box fan.
