Punderson State Park Lodge will celebrate Labor Day Weekend with a free fireworks show, thanks in part to the Clevelands, descendants of the family that owned the lodge close to a century ago.
The show is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 6, at 9 p.m., and the public is invited to enjoy the show. (The rain date is Monday, Sept. 7 at the same time)
Also on Sept. 6, beginning at 3 p.m., at the Punderson Manor House, Kimberly Cleveland will be reading from and signing copies of her new book, Forever in my Heart, and offering a book signing.
Punderson Manor State Park Lodge was originally built as a private home by W.B. Cleveland in 1898. The Cleveland family has a long and rich history in the region. General Moses Cleveland, W.B.’s ancestor, first discovered the area in 1795 and named it “The Western Reserve.” Since that time, several members of the Cleveland family have been involved in enterprises in the Punderson region. Ocie Cleveland, for example, used the lodge as a summer camp for girls in the early 1930s. The State of Ohio acquired the property in 1948.
In addition to the Labor Day Weekend events, the recently renovated lodge is offering numerous specials and packages throughout the fall season. With the 10/20/30 Deal, for example, the longer guests stay the more they save. And for travelers planning trips later in the fall, the lodge is offering numerous Halloween-themed deals, especially appropriate because many guests and employees have reported experiencing paranormal events at the lodge.
Considered by many to be the grande dame of Northeast Ohio, Punderson Manor State Park Lodge recently became even grander due to an ongoing renovation project that has included an array of infrastructure and cosmetic enhancements. Since launching the renovation in January, the lodge has replaced the outdoor pool, completely renovated and updated the cabins, replaced the Manor House exterior trim, installed new electrical wiring and upgraded the ventilation and plumbing systems. An indoor pool renovation will be completed in the fall.
In addition to the lodge renovations, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, which oversees the state’s park system, invested some $6.2 million in ongoing park improvements including the addition of a 700-foot floating boardwalk, the installation of a mechanized lift for the park’s popular sledding hill, campground improvements and construction of a restroom near the 18-hole disc golf course.
The lodge is located 35 minutes from Cleveland and just north of US-422. The lodge offers six rooms and one suite in the Manor House plus 24 rooms in the new wing along with 26 hillside and parkside cabins. Recreational offerings include an 18-hole championship golf course, disc golf course, tennis and basketball courts, geocaching, boating and fishing.
The lodge is managed by Xanterra Parks & Resorts and is open year round. Xanterra also operates Salt Fork State Park Lodge in central Ohio near Cambridge, Mohican State Park Lodge in north central Ohio near Loudonville, Maumee Bay State Park Lodge in northwestern Ohio near Toledo, and Deer Creek State Park Lodge near Columbus.
