The Geauga Humane Society’s Rescue Village will be celebrating the ASPCA’s National Help a Horse Day again this year by hosting a “Help a Horse Day” event on Sunday, April 23rd from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Rescue Village. This nationwide event is for rescues and sanctuaries to raise awareness about the lifesaving work they do year-round to care for at-risk horses.
We are excited to announce that Nevra, the Connemara mare from a 2016 humane case that we featured on Giving Tuesday, has given birth to her long-awaited colt on March 29th around 6:00 am. Nevra and her new born son, who we have named Cillian, will both be at Help a Horse Day 2017 on Sunday, April 23rd.
Nevra was given excellent care during the last few weeks of her pregnancy and assistance after birth from her foster who is a breeding professional. Because Nevra came from a situation of neglect and had previously lost a colt, her foster was prepared to assist the birth if needed. But without any help,
Nevra birthed and nursed her colt who was already standing when we discovered him. Cillian, the colt, has thrived since his birth and Nevra has been a wonderful and protective mother. We will continue to monitor their health and work on socialization, and the pair will be posted for adoption in the coming months once they are ready. When that time comes, Nevra will need an experienced owner who has worked with green and young horses and has the time to devote to both her and Cillian, their socialization, and their handling.
Until then, Rescue Village will be collecting donations throughout the month of April, which is also Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, to support the horses in our care, including Nevra and Cillian. Rescue Village’s Help a Horse Day will take place on Sunday, April 23rd from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Rescue Village. The event is free to the public and will include: tours of the Rescue Village barn, Chinese raffles, activities for kids, educational information on horses, a chance to meet some of the Rescue Village horses and ambassador horses, and much more!
