NEW BOARD MEMBERS APPOINTED Five-person Park Board welcomes Ray Guarino and Linda Smallwood

Geauga Park District is pleased today to welcome two new board members to its Board of Park Commissioners: Ray Guarino of Chesterland and Linda Smallwood of Middlefield.

The two join existing commissioners Howard Bates, Pat Preston and Mario Innocenzi to support Geauga Park District’s mission to preserve, conserve and protect the natural features of Geauga County and to provide outdoor recreational experiences to residents of every age, every ability and at all times of the year.

Geauga County Probate/Juvenile Court Judge Timothy J. Grendell named the new commissioners and swore them into office before today’s meeting: Mr. Guarino on Dec. 6 and Mrs. Smallwood on Jan. 6. Both will serve three-year terms ending Dec. 31, 2024.

Mr. Guarino retired from the Ohio Lottery Commission in 2020 after more than 33 years. He has been a partner at Severino’s Restaurant & Lounge in Eastlake for almost 10 years and currently serves as president of the Italian American Brotherhood Club.

Mrs. Smallwood has served the community in many capacities over the years and currently serves on the Cardinal Local School Board of Education as well as the executive committee of the Great Geauga County Fair Auxiliary as past president. Together with her children and now her grandchildren, she has participated in many Geauga Park District programs throughout the decades and enjoys the diverse features that individual parks offer.

“The parks offer something for everyone,” Mrs. Smallwood said. “There are preserves for bird watching, playgrounds for the kids, areas for sledding and skiing, and designated spaces for fishing and hunting, to name a few activities. No matter your interest, age or physical ability, you can enjoy what our parks have to offer. If you have a certain activity in mind, just click Activities on Geauga Park District’s website and use the amenities filter to see which parks fit your needs.”

Geauga Park District’s staff and commissioners also wish to thank outgoing commissioner Dennis Ibold for his service on the Park Board in 2020 and 2021.

“Now the staff looks forward to working alongside Mr. Guarino and Mrs. Smallwood,” said Executive Director John Oros. “Our residents continue to benefit from a variety of parks, natural areas, park programs and recreational activities, and the Board of Park Commissioners plays a vital role in ensuring that Geauga Park District fulfills its obligations and develops success stories showing our commitment to our mission and our residents.”
