Recruiting High School Students for Youth Philanthropy Group

United Way is recruiting high school students who live or go to school in Geauga County to participate on their Youth Fund Distribution Committee (YFDC). Students who serve on this committee are given the opportunity to award $20,000 to youth-serving organizations in the county.

Students learn about community needs and the organizations that exist to help meet those needs. They review proposals, interview agencies, and make funding decisions. Last year, the YFDC funded Fieldstone Farms Therapeutic Riding Center, Santa’s Hideaway Hollow, Metzenbaum Aktion Club, Camp Sue Osborn, Little Heroes, Geauga Youth Center, and Friends of CASA.

The goals of the YFDC, which meets monthly from October through May, are to provide youth with hands on experience in solving community problems, expand and enhance leadership skills, connect youth to experiences and people outside the confines of their own community, and prepare a new generation of Geauga leaders.

The YFDC is currently recruiting 10th and 11th graders for the 2014-15 school year. Information and applications can be found online or contact Joann Randall, jrandall@uws.orgjrandall@uws.org.
