When you write about family, do you keep the composition process–or the very existence of the work—to yourself? Or has dialogue with family ever become part of the narrative? Beginning with David Sedaris’ essay “Repeat After Me,” we’ll explore how other writers have navigated the dilemmas of writing about family, then share our personal essays and individual questions in a supportive workshop format. Topics include portraying yourself and your family with complexity and compassion, discovering the larger questions that connect your story to the world, and figuring out where to spend next Thanksgiving.

Writers of all levels and backgrounds welcome. Learn the fundamentals of writing personal essays, including turning memories into stories, establishing yourself as a character, using tools like scene and dialogue, conducting research and interviews, and revising for publication. Workshops will offer participants opportunities to write and get feedback.

In this three-week workshop, participants will engage in writing exercises designed to quickly develop the elements of short fiction. Each writer will have their work reviewed by the other participants, and each session will conclude with a new writing assignment.

Join Lit Cleveland for a hands-on two-session workshop exploring links between the visual arts and the art of words. Discuss examples of ekphrastic poems and learn how to use art to inspire your own work in the first session, then return for the second session with a poem of your own for critique.

An intimate and profound portrayal of past and present race relations in Cleveland, A Race Anthology features evocative work from a chorus of local writers, artists, and activists. Lake View Cemetery Foundation announces call for writers for Mother’s Day Celebration
Lake View Cemetery Foundation (LVCF) is seeking writers to be part of a Mother’s Day celebration at Lake View Cemetery, May 14, 2017. LVCF is seeking original poems and dramatic monologues that reflect on and pay homage to important deceased women at Lake View Cemetery. Deadline for submissions is March 31st.
