St. Mary’s 2nd Graders Become Leaf Detectives at Arboretum

The 2nd grade students from St. Mary School became leaf detectives during a field trip to the Holden Arboretum the week of September 22. The field trip was a part of a yearlong partnership with the Arboretum entitled, “Growing Students in Science.”

Second graders collected leaf samples and investigated different types of trees that originate in our area. Teacher Donna Henry said, “The hands-on learning really supports and reinforces the school science curriculum and allows students to experience this great local resource we have in the Arboretum.”

This visit emphasized the interaction between people, trees, and the environment. “We used ping pong balls on a string to see which way the wind was blowing,” said student Elaina Mardula.

Staff from the Arboretum will visit St. Mary School in the winter, and the students will return to the Arboretum in the spring for further investigation.
