Part III of Sometimes I Wish I Was a Cat
If you are just tuning in, you have a little bit of catching up to do. First, read Part I, then read Part II.
Great. Now that you are caught up…
So, Willow came home with us and we introduced her to Meena, slowly of course. We kept them separated for a few days. They could hear and smell each other through the door and even reached under the door to try to get at each other. When we finally opened the door, Willow ran up to Meena so excited and wanting to play. Meena was not so excited or friendly. After a few weeks though, they were playing, chasing each other, and getting along.

Willow loves to watch the bearded dragon (Belle) when we feed her or give her a bath. Meena likes to watch our betta fish (Bubba) swim around in his little tank. There are toys EVERYWHERE! We have feather wands hanging from random places all around the house.

Patty, our editor, even made some catnip toys and sent them to Meena and Willow and they love them.
Now, back to the carpet tree….if you didn’t read the first story, you will have no idea what I am talking about.
I bought this cat tree when I first got Meena. It is a pole that goes from floor to ceiling with three shelves on it fully covered in carpet. Both of the cats love it. They scratch on it. They climb it. They sit on it to look out the window. They play with the toys I have hanging from it. They take turns napping on the top shelf. It has been the best purchase I have made for them.

Speaking of naps, this is what prompted me to write this story. I love to sleep. Don’t get me wrong, I do love being up and active, but my tempurpedic bed is just so warm and comfy that sometimes I would not mind sleeping all day. Which brings me to why I sometimes wish I was a cat. They sleep ALL DAY!!! I have three cat beds in my living room. There is one right on my desk by the window and two more on a table behind my couch. There is a big wicker chair with a soft cushion on it in the spare room that both of them love to sleep on. Meena is a big fan of sleeping on top of noisy things. She likes to lie on newspapers, plastic bags, paper bags, clothes, and reusable grocery bags. Meena also loves to help me work by sitting on my lap at my desk.

So, as I am working all day long, I find myself just staring at them so peacefully napping, wishing I could just cuddle up and go to sleep too. They do not have a single responsibility. They can sleep whenever they want, sit in the window enjoying the breeze and the view, hunt all of the toy mice that are scattered all over the house and then bring them to me in their mouth all proud, meowing with the mouse still in their mouth, showing me what they had done.

It is hilarious when they both get a burst of energy. All of a sudden, we will hear the sounds of claws ripping across the carpet, and all we see is a blur of black and white as they tear through the house. From the spare room, through the living room and kitchen, down the spiral staircase, around the couch downstairs, and back up again. Meena would be in the lead on the way through but on the way back it is Willow in front. We are not sure if they are in a race to see who can do a lap around the entire house first or if they are playing tag and running from the other one. Be prepared if you are sitting on the couch during playtime because the couch seems to just be an obstacle for them to run across and jump over. They don’t care if you are sitting on it. You become an obstacle as well.
Meena is a snuggler. She loves to cuddle up in your elbow or your armpit and lick you. She has done this since the day I got her. On her first night in the house, she slept on my shoulder with her face buried as far into my neck as she could get it, and she licked my neck and my arm until she fell asleep. I am not really sure what all that means, but she seems to be a pretty happy kitty. Willow, on the other hand, is not a cuddler, but she does love it when you sit on the floor and scrub her. She will walk up to you, rub up against you, flop on the floor and demand “scrubbings” as I call them. I have never met a cat that likes to be petted as hard as she does. Willow will come lie with us in bed, especially in the winter when the heating blanket is on.
Meena has always been a talker. All you have to do is look at her sometimes and she will start meowing at you. On occasion, you can have an entire conversation with her. She will just keep talking back. When we first got Willow, it was almost like she did not know how to meow. Well, after watching her big sister, she caught on quickly. They are the most talkative at dinner time. As soon as they hear the refrigerator door open and then the silverware drawer open right after, they come running and meowing. Or if you ask them, “Are you hungry?” or “Do you want to eat?” they start meowing. Another question that will get them going is, “Do you want some treats?”
So, am I that crazy cat lady? Are you a crazy cat person? I am so grateful for my critters and the people who put them in my life.
Doesn’t living in my house look like fun if you are a cat? A life without responsibility and without stress seems like a dream life right? But then you think about having to give yourself a bath with your tongue….and those nasty hairballs….and a litter box….YIKES! The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Everyone’s lives have their ups and downs. You just have to learn to balance everything out and live YOUR life the best way that YOU know how.
