Those who apply must be able to:
1. talk loud
2. keep a group together
3. always know where the closest restroom is
Pretty strange requirements for a job! But such was the beginning for Lynda Nemeth as she took on the position for the Group Tour Department at Lake Metroparks that first winter in 1997. Her education background as a preschool teacher for 13 years had transitioned into an Educational Interpreter position for the park. As the holiday season approached, assistance was needed in the Group Tour Department, and since she was ‘qualified’, she worked part time in that department also. The Tourism Department transitioned into the Sales and Corporate Services, and Lynda eventually became the department manager.
Then and Now
During that time, Geauga County was also growing and expanding as was their need for help in their own tourism arena. Eventually, Geauga Tourism needed a director to fill this office. They were on the lookout for someone with good connections and who was knowledgeable about Geauga County. Lynda was asked to interview for the position. Even though there were many interesting, highly qualified candidates, the professional experience and connections she had gained at Lake Metroparks along with her personal attachment to Geauga County made her a perfect fit, and Lynda was hired.
That was six years ago. Today, Lynda Nemeth and Geauga County Tourism (GCT) are synonymous. Her bubbly personality, enthusiasm, and far-reaching knowledge of the county – not to mention numerous funny stories – should place GCT first on your list of places to call or visit with regards to any location or happenings in the county.
“We are the clearing house for any questions people can come up with about the county,” says Lynda. “People ask anything and everything. Recently I was asked, ‘Where do I purchase fresh goat’s milk?’, ‘Do you have a pawn shop that has resale cross bows?’, ‘My great great great grandfather was buried here; do you know where he is?’” She laughs, then adds, “And my favorite call, ‘How do I get there from here?’ To which I respond, ‘What color is your car?’ I just want to make them think about the question they asked. The stuff we get asked is just amazing!”
With an 800 number, they even get questions on how to get to Niagara Falls! At that point, they turn to their ‘assistant’. “Google is our best friend! We try to help in any capacity we can. We want people to leave our office or the phone thinking, ‘Wow – they took the time to help me find what I needed.’”
People come from all over. Not just the state or even the country. “Last time I counted the guest sign in book, there were 38 states and 14 foreign countries. And those are just the ones that find their way to us and sign the guest book,” Lynda shares.
What We Have to Offer
Geauga County Tourism works with Positively Cleveland, Adventures in Northeast Ohio, and the Ohio Division of Tourism. GCT prints 95,000 visitor guides each year! They tracked 137 motorcoaches last year that took visitors throughout the county to local stores, restaurants, lodging facilities, and area attractions and events, all aiding our local economy.
The office offers maps and brochures, as well as individualized suggestions to meet the likes and needs of visitors. They can offer suggestions whether it is for two ladies who want to shop for the day or a family group that wants a guided tour. There are Amish or historic tours they can set up for groups.
“We help to find the best fit for everyone, whether it’s alone, family, or themed groups; they can be customized.” Lynda is determined to provide any Geauga County visitor, or even a resident, with a memorable, satisfying experience. “We even educate our local population as well. There are lots of people who don’t realize what is in their own backyard!”
Lynda is very passionate in her desire to help local businesses grow. GCT maintains a nice online presence through their website, Facebook, and Twitter accounts, as well as constantly sending out press releases of the many activities and events going on.
Bringing people into the county and directing them to lodging, restaurants, shopping, Amish homes, local parks, and events is why the county generated a whoppin’ 185.6 million dollars from tourism sales volume last year! That is 7% higher than the previous year with 5 million in taxes going back into the county. Because of GCT and their ongoing commitment to promote Geauga County, many small business owners are able to utilize their GCT member resources to help them with marketing and educational workshops that help their business grow and be a vital part of the community.
“We’re this beautiful little county with a relatively small budget so we have a big fund raiser once a year. The Hometown Hoe-Down is a good old-fashioned community event where all money goes right back to promoting our great county and businesses. This is our 4th year doing this, and we really want to grow it each year, so call to get your tickets today!”
