St. Mary School Receives National Certification for Safety

Have you ever wondered what your school is prepared to do in an emergency or crisis situation? Parents of students in St. Mary School can rest assured that their staff is prepared to take command of any emergency event until first responders can arrive.

Throughout the past two years, staff members from St. Mary School have been trained in the National Incident Management System (NIMS) through School SAFE. This protocol allows first responders to communicate directly with school staff during a crisis. Practice drills and scenarios are given during regular staff meetings and as you walk through the halls of the
school, you may hear “over” and “copy” spoken through two way radios by teachers and staff.

“I was very proud of how quickly and efficiently our staff reacted when given a crisis scenario. During final testing, our practice really paid off,” said principal Mary Petelin.

This system could be used during medical emergencies, chemical accidents, intruder situations, lock downs, and even natural disasters. Karyn Brown, school secretary, said, “As scary as it may be to imagine all the possible scenarios, it is reassuring to know that we are prepared to keep all students safe.”
