Urban Growers in Burton Growing Into A One Stop Shop

A few turns down some country roads, and you’ll find the perfect destination place where every green thumb can find what they are looking for to start a summer garden or fill their flower beds.

Urban Growers, located on Rt 700 in Burton, is owned and operated by John Urbanowicz. I had the chance to meet with John and tour this amazing facility.

Urban-Growers-GreenhouseBack in 1999, John started out small with just a few hoop houses on the family farm property. It has since blossomed into a 3-acre covered facility with a large retail showroom full of vibrant color and pleasant scents. Plants are also grown off site at another 30,000 square foot space which gives them plenty of room to space the plants which in turn cuts down on disease and lets them grow fuller. Watering is done with the help of a 10,000 gallon reverse osmosis system.

Urban Growers’ mission is to bring the best high quality plants to market. From flowers and herbs to trees and shrubs, you can truly tell they care.

Staff is extremely friendly and helpful and can answer any questions you may have about planting, growing, or the health of your plants. If they don’t know, they will seek out the answers for you. John emphasizes that he couldn’t do it without the employees. “I give my employees a lot of say in what we do. That’s because I trust them, and if you visit, you will see why; that’s because everyone cares, and it’s not very often that you see that these days.”

Urban-Growers-GreenhouseCustom planting of baskets and planters is also available. You will see their work in areas such as Middlefield, Chagrin Falls, Shaker Heights, Orange Village, Chardon, and many other areas. “We have found a niche in doing baskets for the municipalities, and we work closely with them to bring them new ideas.”

Don’t have a green thumb but still enjoy fresh produce? New this year is the addition of a fresh produce stand featuring products from J&J Produce and Great Lakes Growers. J&J Produce is a local Amish company providing locally grown vegetables. Great Lakes Growers produces hydroponic lettuce and herbs. Produce will be located in front of the Urban Growers’ facility and will be available soon. It is a little late this year., so please check the website or call ahead if you are coming specifically for that.

In addition to the retail store, Urban Growers also operates four satellite locations for your convenience: Garrettsville, Middlefield, Stow and Mantua/Shalersville. Location addresses and time can be found online.

“This summer, Urban Growers will truly be a one stop shop for all your gardening and fresh produce needs. We want to create a destination place for people, and we are slowly getting there. The pieces are finally starting to come together…..but we are never satisfied. Me and my staff are always looking for ways to do it better and provide the best possible product for our customers.” – John Urbanowicz
